Microsuction Ear Wax Removal

A build-up of ear wax is one of the most common reasons for muffled hearing, a blocked or full feeling, ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and whistling hearing aids. The good news is that it is usually simple to fix.

At Prime Audiology, we use microsuction, a method widely used by Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) specialists. Instead of flushing the ear with water, George uses a gentle, controlled suction while viewing your ear canal clearly under magnification.

Why We Use Microsuction:

  • No water or pressure: A dry procedure, which lowers the risk of infection.
  • Suitable for more people: Often appropriate for people with eardrum perforations, grommets or sensitive ears, where syringing is not advised.
  • Quick and comfortable: Most appointments take 15–20 minutes, and many people notice clearer hearing straight away.
  • Clear view throughout: George can see your ear canal and eardrum at every step.

Microsuction Compared With Water Syringing

Feature Microsuction (Prime Audiology) Water Syringing (Irrigation)
Can the ear be seen? Yes, under magnification throughout No, water is flushed in without a direct view
Water Usage None, a completely dry procedure Warm water flushed into the ear under pressure
If you have a perforated eardrum Often suitable Not advised (risk of middle ear infection)
Comfort Usually little or no discomfort Can sometimes cause dizziness or nausea

Thorough Hearing Assessments

A full hearing assessment is far more thorough than a quick online check. George carries out a complete set of tests in a quiet, calibrated room to understand the type and degree of any hearing change, then explains what it means for you in plain language.

  • Video Otoscopy: A close look at your ear canal and eardrum, shown on screen so you can see it too.
  • Pure Tone Audiometry (Air & Bone): Measures how well you hear different pitches, and whether any loss is in the inner ear or the outer and middle ear.
  • Speech Discrimination in Noise: Shows how well you follow speech when there is background noise, which is often where people notice difficulty first.
  • Tympanometry & Middle Ear Reflexes: Checks how your eardrum moves and the pressure behind it, to look for fluid or Eustachian tube problems.

Hearing Aid Fitting & Real Ear Measurement (REM)

Choosing a hearing aid is only the beginning. How carefully it is set up makes the difference between a hearing aid you rely on every day and one that stays in the drawer.

Every ear is a slightly different shape, which changes how sound reaches the eardrum. That is why we use Real Ear Measurement (REM) at every fitting. A soft, thin tube with a tiny microphone sits comfortably in your ear alongside the hearing aid and measures exactly what you are hearing.

This lets George fine-tune your hearing aids so speech is clear and natural, without sounding sharp or harsh.
